As many parents and caregivers know, a successful bedtime is all about routine! Dream journaling can be a calming way for a child to relax, to allow their restlessness to slip away and encourage the mind to journey to a comforting place.

While dream journaling is most often practiced after the dream has occured, we use the activity prior to falling asleep to set intentions for a peaceful dreamscape. My daughter will occasionally have the uncomfortable dream or scary nightmare - this activity allows her a sense of control in journaling (drawing) what she would like to dream about, where she would like to go, who she would like to see, etc. I love witnessing her expansive imagination - the dreamworld is unlimited! Where Yoda hangs out with our dog, Bea, Baila travels to Grandma's house and Mommy is dancing on the rings of Saturn!

Tips:

  • Allow your child to decorate their own dream journal.

  • Reassure your child the journal may remain private - it is a safe place for creative expression.

  • Keep the journal and a pen near the child's bed as a nightly reminder - building routine is important!

  • Save these journals! What a cherished keepsake to reflect on!

Dream journaling prior to bedtime is a great way to encourage optimistic thoughts, exercise the imagination and empower your child to conquer bad dreams or nightmares. Have fun with this activity and may all your child's dreams come true!

Happy Dreaming,

Lindsay Love
