"The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence." - Denis Waitley

A fun way to motivate children to do yoga is to allow them to personalize their space (yoga mat)! This week, I've posted projects such as Vision Boarding, Special Spaces and Altars, and Quiet Time Door Hangers. All of these projects are designed to empower children to communicate and express who they are and to allow them to construct their idea of a safe, peaceful environment. Their yoga mat should also be seen as a welcoming space - and what is more fun than having a unique, personalized mat?!

Supplies:

  • Yoga Mat

  • For this project, your mat does not have to be of high quality. You can find inexpensive mats on ebay for as little as $5.99 or visit Wholesale Yoga Mats online. Also, check with your local yoga studios to inquire if they have any extra, unclaimed mats that they may be willing to donate.

  • Markers

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Glitter & Glue

  • Avoid using glue or glitter on the middle section of the mat - we still want it to function as a no-slide, grippy surface for the child. Glue and glitter can become slick - we use it at the top and bottom of the mat only.

Personalize with a name, quote, drawing or just colors! My daughter was just 3 years old when we did this project for the first time and I am excited to revisit now at age 6. Children gain a sense of ownership and responsibility, along with yet another safe space created from within.

Happy Creating!
