Compassion is the practice of caring for all living things – from people to animals to insects and plants! It is important to recognize that we all require basic needs such as food, shelter, nurture and warmth.
In this post, I have included a downloadable Yoga Lesson based on Compassion for teachers, parents and caregivers to correspond with the project below. The lesson is designed to open communication surrounding this positive character trait while being active through asanas designed to relate to the topic at hand.
It important to recognize that some people and creatures are in need of our help in order to thrive. This project stems from a compassion for stray cats in neighborhoods who need shelter, especially during the winter months. By creating a warm and safe space for cats without homes, we are fulfilling an incredible act of compassion, kindness and selflessness!
This project is quite easy once you obtain the few supplies needed (click here for alternative options):
Plastic Tub with Lid
Egg Cartons (as an eco-friendly alternative to styrofoam)
Straw (not hay)
Cutting utensil (Blade, Knife)
Tips:
Search Craigslist or Freecycle for free/donated supplies.
Use egg cartons to line the inside of the plastic tub for added insulation.
It is very important to use straw and not hay - in case of perciptiation, the hay will become wet and will not provide warmth for the cat.
Place the shelter in a wooded or brushy area known for housing strays. Check back on the shelters every few weeks to replace any straw or bedding, if needed.
Never place food in the shelter - it will attract unwanted critters that may harm the cats.
Creating a Cat Shelter is a quick and easy project that will tap into the deepest feelings of compassion! Click the image below to download a yoga lesson that will help carry on the conversation of compassion with your children, students or peers!
Enjoy!
